Let's Warm Things Up Around Here!

Well, the frost covering the ground here in the mornings is definitely showing that the icy tendrils of Winter are creeping in. What better way to overcome that than a little bit of "Hot Lotta?" I really like this album, but found it impossible to find any reviews or information outside of the line-up credits while perusing the Internet. With an all-star line-up led by Edward Vesala and including Peter Brotzmann and Peter Kowald (unfortnately I can't say I am altogether that much of a fan of the fourth, Aaltonen, and his flute work...) it is kind of a surprise that this has fallen by the wayside. This session reminds me a lot of watching a fire. Sometimes there are concentrated little bursts of energy bouncing around for brief moments, sometimes it just smolders with an underlying intensity and sometimes it catches with a burst into a roaring inferno. Actually for the time period, Brotzmann sounds fairly restrained here at times and there aren't any complete sonic assaults here, but he does bring his trademark energy and sound. Anyways, I think this will be well-enjoyed, despite its mysterious two star rating on AMG (How can they rate something without a review? Odd...) so check it out!

Oh, on a personal note, in the last month and a haIf I have built a horse shed and paddock, and my wife and I pruned our roses and planted all of our bulbs for the spring. Things continue to look better and better around our new house. For you horse fans out there, my wife has a 15.2 hand Appaloosa and we have a little mule named Georgia Lee after the song on the Tom Waits album "Mule Variations." It has been a beautiful Fall here in Idaho (US), so it has been nice to be outside working!

Heya Centrifuge,

Glad I could find something to (perhaps just briefly?) pull you away from the Braxton immersion program. Don't get me wrong--I think what you are doing is awesome, very interesting and fun to read about, but the last thing we want to do is have you burn out!

Speaking of your Braxton progress, I feel like such a heel... Not only have I completely failed to add my two cents worth at your site, but I also just updated my links here and forgot to add your site in. Sorry! I will get right on that. Speaking of Brax, I pulled out his Duo album with Evan Parker. Good grief, I had forgotten how amazing that album is!

Anyways, I hope you and Ms. Cent are enjoying the holliday season! :)

wow my man - where did you get this?? it's excellent... kowald, my god... what a gigantic presence he is here - but vesala really plays hard throughout too, and brotz is on fire - now, i think aaltonen fits in fine when he's on sax (and even sometimes on flute though i agree it's less convincing) - so much so that i shall have to assume he was influenced by brotz in the first place; if not, he apparently becomes a chameleon here because there are times when one could almost be hearing two brotzmanns... not quite of course, that full cry of brotz's can't be replicated. but aaltonen is a good player too - he's on vesala's famous nan madol album, otherwise i myself have only heard a very recent recording of a trio gig he played in new york with reggie workman and andrew cyrille... i thought it was good, though aaltonen took a little time to warm up - in the end it was probably rather better than the trio 3 set which followed it

anyway - i really enjoyed this album and am intrigued to find out more about it - the efi pages (on brotz and kowald) don't mention it at all

ps thanks... holiday season?

J-Bombay said...

Hey Centrifuge,

Sorry about being so Ameri-centric...here we have Thanksgiving towards the end of November and then on to Christmas. Don't think there are any kooky pilgrim kind of celebrations over in England. Anyways, I do hope you are still enjoying everything! :)

Anyways, about the album, I think I got it in a trade or maybe as a rip somewhere. Yeah, it does seem to be VERY obscure. Like I said I couldn't find any reviews or anything. I was worried that the fact that I liked it so much might not be a universal feeling, so I struggled a bit trying to write something about it. Yeah, Kowald, Brotz and Vesala pretty much rip it up on this one. It is funny that you would mention Aaltonen sounding much like Brotzmann at times--I thought the same thing when I when I listened to it. You know what, I think I have heard his stuff with Cyrille and Workman, and it wasn't bad, but here I think he could have been substituted for and it wouldn't have made that much of a difference. I definitely couldn't say that of the other three!

I wish I had some more info to share about this one, but I guess we will all just have to settle for just hearing it. (Unless somebody out there knows some more...could it be??) Unfortunately I don't have the liner notes and honestly I haven't heard of the Blue Master label outside of this recording. Anyways, I am very glad that you enjoyed it (and it seems others as well-- pretty decent comment response so far for only about 25 downloads!) and now I am off to go listen to Conference of the Birds again. I'll try and leave an updated opinion over at your blog!

Okay all of you comment section dwellers, here is an extra treat for you. Avant Grape, in his infinite kindness (and because he was happy to find a copy of "For Don Cherry" on here), mentioned that Mats Gustafsson recorded another tribute to Cherry called "The Thing" on the Crazy Wisdom label. Well, good ol' AG dug that puppy out, ripped it in FLAC and posted it over at his site. Here is the link to it:

http://avantgrape.blogspot.com/2007/11/scandinavian-tribute-to-mr-cherry.html

It very well might be my new favorite Gustafsson allbum! It also features Ingebrigt Haker Flaten and Paul Nilssen-Love and is just a truly interesting, fiery listen. Go check it out and leave him a thank you in the comments!

I'm very appreciated to see this album posted here. hot lotta is the first Brötzmann album i ever bought. and the music is today as exciting as it was the first time i heard it.
i think, blue master has been one of that very obscure record labels, you did found seldom in the record stores. from the time i bought this record (second hand) up to now i never heard of it or of other records of this label; with the exception of a request some weeks ago in the blogoshere. don't ask where it was.
thanks for spreading this into a wider audience.

Blue Master was a pretty tiny Finnish label which had minimal circulation at the time, outside of Finland (and maybe even inside!). This is one of its better known releases, and as you all know, it's a cracker! I have another Blue Master (#311) which is a solo Edward Vesala release from 1973 called "I'm Here".

Hey Sambeck2001,

Thanks for leaving your story about your first impressions that this album left you with from back in the day. Your first Brotzmann album? That's pretty cool! You don't happen to have the old sleeve for this record lying around somewhere with some liner notes, do you? Glad that you stopped in and gave your input on the whole Blue Master label as well! Thanks!

J

J-Bombay said...

Oh Glmlr, you big tease... :-D

Another Blue Master record to check out, which you ever so casually mentioned above...what can we do to persuade you to post it?

Thanks for the Blue Master info as well. I have done a couple of web searches on it, and have only been able to find a couple references to it (one a library journal search detailing the history of Finnish jazz labels, unfortunately only available with a subscription) and it does seem to be difficult to track down. I did a label search on AllMusic (I know, far from a definitive source) and it only came up with three Vesala Recordings (Nana, Hot Lotta and the album you mentioned, I'm Here). There must be more out there, but I wonder what style of music or what other artists were recording with them. Anyways, I am on a stream of consciousness ramble here! Thanks for the visit and the information!

Okay,

This album is generating some serious interest and excitement, so here's a question for you all. I have a Mac, and usually just post things in AAC format (iTunes ready and decent format in my opinion), but is there any interest in higher bitrate mp3's or even FLAC (I haven't done it before, but I do have this program called Max that apparently can do it) ? I think the sound is fairly decent on the files I posted, but then again some of you might have some nice high-end stereo stuff and might actually notice a difference. Of course, there are the limitations of the original vinyl and transfer equipment. Anyways, interest or opinions?

J:

I'm a total clunkhead when it comes to computers, (but hopefully not so when it comes to music!), so I don't have a clue as to how to post the Vesala for you. That's why all my posts on C#9 and elsewhere went through someone else's hands. All I could do was rip the vinyl to CDR and head for the post-office. The limits of my technical skills.

Mp3 or Flac? Personally, I'd say flac when the music/recording seriously deserves it, otherwise high quality mp3 is OK. Over to you, Solomon!

centrifuge said...

i personally am happy with the aac files... i have no great love for apple so i try not to sell their products for them (not all of them work very well anyway, in my experience) BUT i do really rate itunes as a music manager, and have never bothered to look for anything else. but it won't play FLACs and this is one reason (among many) why i don't touch 'em

i've basically stopped harping on about this because i am heavily outnumbered, but i'm going to start again! 'cos in principle i am strongly resistant to the fetish for "audiophile perfection" which leads to FLAC fast becoming the new minimum acceptable format for music files... it IS NOT necessary, i don't care what anyone says and yes, i am happy to take it on trust that there is an audible difference (especially as regards subtleties such as note decay, etc etc). this is assuming that one has a top-notch stereo to begin with. but - what are we doing here? sharing things that we like and meeting people, or just building up our own personal collections? the latter is what a lot of non-bloggers presuppose we are all doing, which is why the blogging scene is so reviled in some quarters... but i personally DO NOT feel that i am doing that, even though of course i am archiving the material as i listen to it - but in whatever form comes to me, same as i always did. some of my most treasured recordings are shitty nth-generation tape copies... it is the music i am interested in, and i find my ears adjust very quickly to recordings i like, no matter how compromised they are - the music draws me in.

just stop and think about it - i mean really, anyone would think that the current standard of mp3s (etc) is so appalling that only a moron would want them... this really isn't the case, is it? who thinks this album rip sounds bad - whose enjoyment was spoiled because of the conditions under which it was transferred?

there may well be value in the idea of creating a "universal archive" but this is not it, we are not there yet, at the moment we're just checking out each other's stuff and we are *all learning in the process* - wow, how did we manage that with all these useless mp3s? well, we did...

IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE FUCKING PERFECT

just my (groan) two cents

(probably more like a quarter)

glmlr said...

Phew, Cent, that was a walletful!

Switching tracks, in case anyone possibly isn't aware, there is a better-known Edward Vesala album on the Finnish (not Brit) Leo label, no. 009, called "Heavy Life". With: Bob Stewart, Reggie Workman, Howard Johnson, Tomasz Stanko, J.D. Parran, Chico Freeman, James Spaulding and Joe Daley. Rec. NY 1980. And very fine it is too!

Loving Hot Lotta by the way

J-Bombay said...

Hey Centrifuge,

Your words contained some fiery wisdom (not unlike some of the music around here) and I am glad you brought those issues up. At the time I posted the offer, I was thinking "Here is a recording that people probably won't find a physical copy of in their lifetimes--it might be nice to have a sharp copy..." You are right though, the AAC files sound good, the music is there for exposure and the important thing is that it has induced people to search, discuss and reflect. Basically the most important reasons why I enjoy blogging in the first place!

Your comment about some of your favorite music sitting on some poorly recorded shitty old tapes was dead on. I have some pretty raggedy stuff that I wouldn't dream of getting rid of and am just happy that those recordings exist in a listenable form.

Thanks for helping to put things back into perspective, and thanks for such an honest and open opinion!

Sincerely,

J

hi centrifuge,
i am according to you. we are in here only for the music ... and for the eople, of course. mp3 at a high bitrate is sufficient for my ears, as - ithink- for most of us. as a broadband internet user, i DO like flacs, to burn cds, because it's often more comfortable to listen to a cd. but, my dvd player can play mp3s as well as cds, so i don't bother.

(please excuse my english.)

greeetings to you "old fashioned" guy!

to j-bombay:
liner notes in Finnish, German, and English.
"German-Finnish Jazz Workshop
In spring 1973 The Goethe Institute in Helsinki invited to Finland two representatives of German free jazz: peter Brötzmann (saxophones) and peter Kowald (bass). Two Finnish colleages - Juhani Aaltonen, saxophonist-flutist and Edward Vesala, drummer - were awaiting them in Helsinki. These foru musicians were expected to play together during the next ten days. They had not seen each other earlier and the new quartet met in a student club on 9th April without having made any musical advance plans or practised together beforehand. This debut was followed by three other club performances in Helsinki. After these jobs the band made a tour which was directed to the cities of Jyväskylä, Pori, Tampere and Turku. The Finnish Radio recorded twice the playing of the band: first as a "live"-recording in a club and later in the studio, too.
This record, which is a result of the above described ten days' musical reciprocity, was made in the Finnvox studio in helsinki in conclusion of the visit on 19th April."
