"Rhythmic virtuoso Hamid Drake and reeds innovator Mats Gustafsson deliver a jaw-dropping and all-too-brief set recorded in Chicago on Oct. 19, 1995, the day of Don Cherry’s death. One of the few live records to make this listener earnestly wish she’d been in attendance, Drake and Gustafsson’s meeting is a perfect example of the phenomenal synergy possible between two musicians. The two in question are an ideal match; both temper the muscularity of their playing with sensitivity and musical sophistication. Neither artist allows the other the option of sitting on his heels at any point; this recording is challenging, intense, and enjoyable from start to finish.
Plus, it seems like they’re having fun; have a listen to the frenetic, playful second piece, wherein Gustafsson presumably forgoes his saxophones for a bit to yelp and whoop in response to Drake’s inspired djembe playing. Gustafsson, frequently touted as a "rising star" of European jazz, is in my opinion rarely matched among powerhouse reedsmen in creativity. Meanwhile, the tireless and infallible Drake delievers one of the more visceral and thrilling percussion solos to make it to records. This is improvisation, and it rocks, to boot; my favorite live record of the year. Only 600 copies entered the world, so you know what that means."

This one took some serious time to track down. I am happy to say that I wasn't let down at all by the final results. Drake and Gustafsson are perfectly suited together and they really build off of one other. SIMPLY AMAZING!

I first saw Mats play about 3 years ago; I don't know how I'd missed him up until then??? Ever since I have been collecting his albums as I come across them (not frequently enough though), do you have any recordings by Gush or The Thing? I'd be very interested in them.
Hamid is an amazing person and the comments too this post could apply to many of his collaborations.

Hope you enjoyed the Shepp playing Bird recording. Talking of which, I have an old Shepp LP "One for the Trane", which is a live recording at the Donaueschinger festival 1967. I believe the same performance was issued on CD at some time under the title "Lve at Donaueschinger", but I can find virtually no reference on the net to my version, which was released on Polydor 583 732 in 1969. I don't know how rare this recording is, but as it's not available I'll rip it an post a link.
Different matter, curved-air.com is currently hosting a recording by Johnny Dyani (South African bass player with the Blue Notes in the 60s), has Don Cherry and Dudu Pakwana on it. Should be worth a visit.

About Drake, that guy is amazing. I was just listening to his album with Fred Anderson the other day (Back Together Again--thoroughly enjoyable and easily available). I love his stuff with William Parker as well. As far as Arthur Doyle goes, I am just starting to find more stuff out about him. Thanks for the lead!

In a mood for some Shepp anyways, I went to my music library, only to find that I had snagged "Force" already. Chalk that one up to creeping senility, but who really cares--it made my afternoon! Man, you are full of hot tips to some good tunes. I noticed that Curved Air was back up just recently, but hadn't seen the Johnny Dyani album yet. Haven't had a chance to listen to it yet (see the note to Atanase--I did manage to listen to a portion of the Shepp playing Bird after I was on my "Force" kick--nice!), but everything about it sounds great. I can't think of something Cherry was involved with that I didn't like.
About that live Shepp, I found the album on Allmusic.com and it doesn't look like it is even close to in print (there weren't even any sellers offering copies). If you would, please post it. Thank you in advance!
On a different note, I know this post was a bit out there. Still connecting it in with Mats Gustafsson (he was the one the wanted the album re-issued I think), I was planning on posting "Waves from Albert Ayler" from the Mount Everest Trio when I get the chance. Pretty sure it is out of print, and just a great disc. Any objections? Agreement?
heh. mixed feelings about that (mt ev trio). i'm pretty sure it's IN print, sort of (readily available from online retailers). and i always intended to buy a copy of it one day - i downloaded "orinoco" from epitonic over a year ago and it had me flying round the room.
on the other hand, dangle it in front of me like that... what's a guy supposed to do? i am downloading it as i write...
may still end up buying a copy one day (if only for the picture of those 70s haircuts)
yes, i think mats g was the one who tipped off atavistic. no-one outside sweden even knew they existed from what i gather, but he himself was greatly inspired by them at a formative age.
Orinoco was played by a BBC Radio 3 jazz programme about 2 years ago, which I recorded. Never been able to track them down since. I'll certainly be grabbing this one.
For some reason, I can't access any of your links on Rapidshare. I've been searching all over for this extremely rare disc and I'd love to have a chance at hearing it. I have the Okka Limited discs by Drake w/ the DKV Trio (DKV Live) and the duo one with Mats playing alongside Gunter Christmann.
