Let's end this day on a postive note!

A while back when I posted "For Don Cherry," Flux'us expressed some interest in some more Mats Gustafsson. Here is an album that is definitely out of print and fairly hard to find, "One to (Two)." Gunter Christmann really matches the style of Gustafsson well, and the album swirls with punctuated twists and turns. Gustafsson also manages to get some seriously strange and amazing noises out of his horn (Christmann does as well out of his cello and trombone for that matter). My wife and I have a green-cheeked conure (parrot) and one night it was making some very odd squawking noises. I went out to the living room and put select parts of this album on for my wife and she couldn't believe how organic and similar to the parrot this sounded at times. Art imitating life or life imitating (mimicking?) art? I'd like to think that soon our parrot will start imitating all kinds of wild jazz--it sure would save me a bundle on album expenses! Either way, we both had a good laugh about it. Seriously though, this album is way more than just that. If you are in the mood for something different, definitely check this out--you won't be disappointed. There are some intense spurts of unbridled fury on this album as well--it definitely runs the gamut. Here's a review I snagged from the Okka website giving a bit more of a detailed description:

"Rarely heard German provocateur Günter Christmann plays cello on twelve of eighteen freely improvised duos with saxophonist Mats Gustafsson. On the other six, he is heard on the trombone, for which is he is better known. It all works exceedingly well, as Christmann ruptures more than a few bastions of complacency with percussive scratches and highly infectious scurried patches of pulverized explosions, while Gustafsson continues to impress with his perfectly drawn puffs, pants, and snorts. Together, their intense, puckered chops rip through stereotypical tediousness and blast charmed lines of unending fascination. Often quiet, swift, and supple, almost like lizards darting in the desert eve, these two intertwine magnificently, with little percussive sounds predominating, and breathy snorts meeting scratched ruffles. On trombone, Christmann is Gustafsson’s equal, never grandstanding, while both tweak uncharted skies. The trombonist favors muted forays, with intense, yet quiet blats the predominant focus. Both Christmann and Gustafsson can be hard-core, and the saxophonist enjoys energetic bursts to startle and surprise. Mostly, though, this is music that challenges as it subverts, its highly esoteric, yet disarmingly attractive lines an attractive hook. Highly ambitious, subtly exciting, and always formidable, Christmann and Gustafsson make a delightfully revolutionary pair. Not easy listening, but rewarding listening, and continuously challenging listening, these guys shake the heavens with heartfelt cries of mercy. There are no liner notes but what could be said? Powerful stuff, but you have to look below the surface."

-J,

Worked fine for me! Thanks.

I have few of his releases mainly, The Thing & Gush plus a couple under his own name.

I'm realy not sure what is in or out of print!! Most recordings seem to be on obscure labels with only indipendant stores stocking them???

Heya Flux'us,

Yeah, I know for a fact this is out of print (it is actually a numbered limited copy), but as for his other stuff I know what you mean. That kind of info sure can be a challenge to figure out--most major stores(even Amazon.com) don't carry those labels anyway.

On to other stuff, that Finnish jazz you posted at CN9 looks pretty cool. Hopefully I will get a chance this weekend to listen to it. Thanks!

Thank you very much for this. I first Mats with the Thing on "Garage". Last year went to see him play with the Brotzmann tentet. Fantastic! This year he is playing in Stirling with the Thing. Don't Miss it. Very good.

Een,

Thanks, this is great! I had read about this album, but haven't ever seen it around. It always seems to show up on recommended lists from Gustafsson's discography, and I am currently listening to the why of that.

Hope you snagged "For Don Cherry" from the archives (I think the link is still active)--another hard to find gem of his.

Thanks for stopping by, and another huge thanks for the album link!

nothing to read was available on another blog a while ago - a blog which ended up dying prematurely. the last few months online have been a bit of a blur so my (normally reliable!) memory can't currently supply me with the name of the blog or that of its author - een, it wasn't you was it?!

i find gustafsson quite enigmatic - i've heard a few things of his(leader or sideman) and still think i'd have trounble recognising him. sometimes he makes lots of noise and sounds like brotzmann, others he plays very quietly and seems more interested in exploring breath sounds... an interesting player for sure.

no, not a blogger i...
;)
i love gustafsson's recordings with paul lovens (i like ANYTHING with paul lovens) - 'mouth eating trees and related activities' on okka is super as well. gush's 'live at fasching' is also great...
less enamored of his 'heavy' stuff...my girlfriend saw him with lee ranaldo in stockholm and almost became physically ill from the intensity of the sound.

Many thanks for this and for your blog! Great work. I am an even bigger fan of Gunter Christmann than I am of Gustafsson.....as a thank-you, here is a bootleg of the Art Ensemble of Chicago playing with a European all-star free-improvising group, with solo time given to Christmann:

also, this is one of my favorite free-improv records ever, and very, very rare (on disc, at least)...a duo of Thomas Lehn (analog synth) and Christmann (cello/trombone)...I think it is SPECTACULAR:

Grasp, release,

Fantastic! I am a huge AEC fan and can't wait to get home and check this one out (I am just reading this during my lunch break). I am sure the other disc is going to be spectacular as well. It is great when we can all get going on a new tangent to explore.

As for this blog, thanks so much for your visit and your comments. I have really enjoyed sharing rare music, hearing what all you readers are thinking, and especially the occasional post in the comments--nice to be able to expand my horizons as well! What an amazing community to be a part of! I wasn't sure where this was headed when I started, but man has it been a good time and this has far exceeded any of my expectations. Thanks to you and to everyone is for that!

Oh, I am going to try and up this Hell's Kitchen/Soundscape album (DIW)that I have later this week and it should be up by Wednesday if not sooner (time permitting). A phenomenal Odeon Pope track, some nice Brotz, some very creative Don Cherry, etc., etc. Simply put, some more great music.

Thanks again for the links!
